Doug Dir - Bicycle Messenger, Washington DC - November 1984

The year, 1984. I was living in Washington DC, working as a bicycle messenger for a company called Action Courier Service. One of the company's regular clients was Austrian Radio And TV, who maintained a press bureau in Georgetown. They decided to do a human-interest story on bicycle messengers, a concept apparently foreign to Austria, and asked Action's management to recommend a subject they could film. As a veteran of the streets, and one of the top riders in the city, I was selected.

On a cold autumn afternoon, an Austrian Radio And TV cameraman, on foot and in car, recorded this raw footage. After all these years, I've finally converted the VHS tape to digital format. Here's proof that I, too, was young once.
